We had cocktails at a friend's house the night before our wedding, for about 65 people. My family brought in food, ordered in part from independent caterers. For entertainment, we hired a four-person jazz group (www.groovekey.com) - very reasonable, and very cool!

I asked my (large)family to take turns greeting people at the door, and also clear away used plates. We also hired someone to help walk around, clear plates and glasses, and serve hors d'oeuvres. It was great because neither my family nor our friends (the hosts) felt like they had to be working every minute.

The best part about having everyone over for cocktails is that we got to talk to many of our guests, especially those who had come in from out of town, reducing the pressure to get to every single table at the reception.

: My son and his fiancee would like to have a casual rehearsal dinner at home. Who has done this? Any recommendations for caterers? Any advice would be appreciated as to what worked (and what didn't!) concerning any aspect of this at all.

: Thanks!
